Filming on the river Soca

Jul 19, 2024

Welcome to our behind-the-scenes look at filming our first courses on the stunning Soča River in Slovenia. Known for its emerald green waters and exhilarating rapids, the Soča River is not just a kayaker’s paradise but also an ideal location for our upcoming online course.

The Perfect Setting: Soča River

The Soča River, with its pristine beauty and dynamic flow, offers an unparalleled backdrop for whitewater kayaking. The river’s clear, turquoise waters wind through the breathtaking Julian Alps, providing a picturesque and challenging environment for kayakers of all levels. The combination of serene pools and amazing rapids makes it an excellent classroom for our online course.

Planning and Preparation

Filming on a river, especially one as dynamic as the Soča, requires meticulous planning. Our team spent weeks scouting locations, understanding the features, and identifying key spots that would best illustrate the techniques and lessons we aim to teach.

Equipment Essentials

Capturing the essence of whitewater kayaking requires robust and versatile filming equipment. Here’s a glimpse into our gear list:

  •  High Quality professional cameras and lenses:  We wanted to capture all of the action in crystal clear 4k and at times we needed 4 x slow motion so that you can really see the techniques used. From tthe experience we have gained with Online Sea Kayaking we took with us 2 x Sony A7siii and a variety of G-Master lenses.
  • Drones: Aerial shots from drones showcased the river’s expanse and the different skills we needed to capture, adding a dramatic dimension to the footage.
  • Microphones: Capturing clear audio in a noisy, watery environment is challenging. We used waterproof microphones and windshields to ensure our Chris's voice was heard over the roar of the river.

Challenges of Filming on the Soča

Filming on the Soča River is not without its challenges. The ever-changing water levels and flow rates required us to be adaptable and ready to change locations or reschedule shoots. Weather conditions in the Julian Alps can also be unpredictable, adding another layer of complexity to our production schedule.  Now that we have had chance to look back through the content we filmed the very changeable weather and water levels gave us a great variety of footage.

Bringing It All Together

Post-production is where the magic happens. We have been working diligently to weave together the footage, audio, and graphics to create a seamless and captivating learning experience. Each lesson is being crafted to ensure clarity, engagement, and a touch of the excitement that comes with kayaking on the Soča.

Conclusion

Filming our whitewater kayaking course on the Soča River has been an exhilarating journey. The combination of the river’s natural beauty, the thrill of the rapids, and Chris's expertise promises to deliver an unparalleled online learning experience. We can’t wait to share these lessons with you and inspire a new generation of kayakers to explore the world of whitewater adventure.

Stay tuned for the launch of our course and get ready to paddle through the heart of Slovenia’s Soča River from the comfort of your home!
