Essential Personal Kit for Paddling as Part of a Team

Mar 30, 2025

When paddling as part of a team in moving water, having the right personal kit is crucial for safety, efficiency, and comfort. While there are both group and individual kit requirements, this guide will focus on the personal equipment you need to be a valuable member of the team and ensure a successful day on the river.

Throwline and Knife

A throwline is an essential rescue tool, which everyone should have in their boat. If you're carrying a throwline, it's equally important to carry a knife. You have a couple of options:

  • A knife that attaches to a buoyancy aid strap, allowing for quick access.

  • A folding knife stored in your buoyancy aid.

Regardless of the style, your knife should have a locking blade, be operable with one hand, and be dedicated to cutting rope in emergency situations.

Additional Buoyancy Aid Essentials

  • Whistle: Used to gain attention and communicate with your team.

  • Rescue Tape: A versatile tool that serves multiple purposes, which we will explore in another lesson.

  • Carabiners: A minimum of two carabiners should be carried to assist in various rescue scenarios.

Phone and Drybag

Carrying a phone on your person rather than in a drybag inside your boat ensures you can call for help if you become separated from your gear. Additionally, a drybag is essential for keeping spare clothes and extra supplies dry.

Depending on the season, your drybag should contain:

  • Cold Weather: Spare jacket, hat, gloves.

  • Warm Weather: Long-sleeved layers for sun protection, sun cream.

  • Extra Food: Snacks to keep your energy levels up.

Choosing the Right Carabiners

Carabiners are a key piece of safety equipment, and selecting the right type is crucial.

  1. Snap Link Carabiners (Non-Screw Gate)

    • Pros: Commonly available.

    • Cons: Can accidentally clip onto straps or gear, leading to potential hazards.

  2. Small Screw Gate Carabiners

    • Pros: Secure and effective.

    • Cons: Smaller size can make handling difficult in cold conditions; may not accommodate larger ropes.

  3. Large D-Shaped Carabiners (Preferred Choice)

    • Pros: Easily accommodate ropes and knots; strong and reliable.

    • Cons: Slightly bulkier but provide the best safety.

Carabiner closure mechanisms also matter:

  • Screw Gate: Requires manual locking, providing additional security.

  • Spring-Loaded Barrel: Can accidentally open if dragged over an edge, reducing its effectiveness.

For personal use, carrying three to four large screw gate carabiners ensures you have enough to manage various river scenarios without relying solely on teammates' gear.

Storage and Accessibility

All essential items should be stored securely in the pockets of your buoyancy aid for easy access. Properly securing and organising your kit ensures you're prepared to handle emergencies effectively and contribute efficiently to team efforts on the river.

By equipping yourself with the right personal gear, you enhance safety, preparedness, and overall enjoyment of your paddling experience.
